Congratulations from all BPW members to Edwina Bicker

BPW is proud to congratulate Edwina Bicker on being the first woman to become President of the Association of Her Majesty’s District Judges.

Edwina was the youngest national president of BPW UK Ltd from 1985-1987 and served on the Women’s National Commission at the same time. BPW UK and BPW International are grateful for the legal advice she offered for many years. She was Chief Parliamentarian at the International Congress in The Hague and Chairman of Constitution and Resolutions Committee in Nairobi, chairing the sessions which made radical changes to the International Federation of BPW Constitution.

Members may be unaware that Yorkshire born Edwina initially trained as a teacher of Housecraft and Needlework and taught cookery and needlework for two and a half years before becoming an articled clerk with a Maidstone firm. She passed the Solicitors Qualifying Examination with Honours and at the same time obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree from London University. A family law specialist, she became senior partner in the firm where she had trained and was the second woman to be President of the Kent Law Society in 1994 before being appointed a District Judge the next year.

Married for 35 years, Edwina enjoys reading, acting and decorative needlework. Eight years ago she qualified in a slightly different way – as a scuba diver.
