CEDAW – Convention on the Elimination of all forms of discrimination against women
Nikki Bennett-Willetts sent the views of BPW members to the Women’s National Commission as part of their “shadow” report for the United Nations. In the summer, the United Kingdom government will be examined on the report they sent to the Committee of the United Nations which deals with the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women – usually called CEDAW. The report will be considered by the 41st CEDAW session in New York from 30th June to 18th July 2008.

The U. K. government will have to show it complies with the Convention on women’s human rights. As some feel there is a tendency for any government to overplay their successes and underplay their failures, the committee will also look at “shadow” reports at the same time which may highlight concerns from women in the UK. BPW has been asked for its views for the shadow report. This shadow report will be presented to the UN in April and the WNC will have a team of women backing up the report at the July meeting. Attendees will be able to watch discussion on the report and contribute to the discussion. BPW members wishing to attend should contact Nikki.

The items discussed included women in prison and implementation of the recommendations of the Corston report, tackling the gender pay gap as well as the need for an integrated strategy for violence against women.
