Do you have what it takes to be a volunteer school governor?
School Governors are the largest group of volunteers in the UK but there can still be as many as 40,000 places on governing bodies across England empty at any one time. Can you fill one of them and make a difference to education and the community?

Today’s schools are highly autonomous and expected to manage their own budgets, their own internal policies, and their own appraisal, recruitment and admissions processes. A varied group of people is needed to allow the school to adequately reflect the community it serves. You don't need to be a parent yourself, or have any links whatsoever with the education system. All that is required is that you are over 18 and can spare around 6 to 8 hours a month of your time.

Volunteering as a school governor is also good for you. Research has shown that employees who serve as governors gained valuable experience in areas including finance, decision making and prioritising tasks.

The School Governors’ One-Stop Shop is a small charity that exists to make it easy for people to volunteer. They work alongside Local Authorities to help recruit and place volunteers into mutually beneficial schools. All their services are FREE to volunteers, schools, Local Authorities and employers. For an application form or more information contact the One-Stop Shop on 020 7354 9805, via e-mail info@sgoss.org.uk, or visit the web-site www.sgoss.org.uk to apply online.
